  33. .SH NAME
  34. uuid \- DCE compatible Universally Unique Identifier library
  35. .SH SYNOPSIS
  36. .B #include <uuid.h>
  37. .SH DESCRIPTION
  38. The UUID library is used to generate unique identifiers for objects
  39. that may be accessible beyond the local system. This library
  40. generates UUIDs compatible with those created by the Open Software
  41. Foundation (OSF) Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) utility
  42. .BR uuidgen .
  43. .sp
  44. The UUIDs generated by this library can be reasonably expected to be
  45. unique within a system, and unique across all systems. They could
  46. be used, for instance, to generate unique HTTP cookies across multiple
  47. web servers without communication between the servers, and without fear
  48. of a name clash.
  49. .SH "CONFORMING TO"
  50. This library generates UUIDs compatible with OSF DCE 1.1, and hash based UUIDs
  51. V3 and V5 compatible with RFC-4122.
