  48. <p>
  49. The functions in this built-in module control the behavior
  50. of the JIT compiler engine.
  51. </p>
  52. <h3 id="jit_onoff"><tt>jit.on()<br>
  53. jit.off()</tt></h3>
  54. <p>
  55. Turns the whole JIT compiler on (default) or off.
  56. </p>
  57. <p>
  58. These functions are typically used with the command line options
  59. <tt>-j on</tt> or <tt>-j off</tt>.
  60. </p>
  61. <h3 id="jit_flush"><tt>jit.flush()</tt></h3>
  62. <p>
  63. Flushes the whole cache of compiled code.
  64. </p>
  65. <h3 id="jit_onoff_func"><tt>jit.on(func|true [,true|false])<br>
  66. jit.off(func|true [,true|false])<br>
  67. jit.flush(func|true [,true|false])</tt></h3>
  68. <p>
  69. <tt>jit.on</tt> enables JIT compilation for a Lua function (this is
  70. the default).
  71. </p>
  72. <p>
  73. <tt>jit.off</tt> disables JIT compilation for a Lua function and
  74. flushes any already compiled code from the code cache.
  75. </p>
  76. <p>
  77. <tt>jit.flush</tt> flushes the code, but doesn't affect the
  78. enable/disable status.
  79. </p>
  80. <p>
  81. The current function, i.e. the Lua function calling this library
  82. function, can also be specified by passing <tt>true</tt> as the first
  83. argument.
  84. </p>
  85. <p>
  86. If the second argument is <tt>true</tt>, JIT compilation is also
  87. enabled, disabled or flushed recursively for all sub-functions of a
  88. function. With <tt>false</tt> only the sub-functions are affected.
  89. </p>
  90. <p>
  91. The <tt>jit.on</tt> and <tt>jit.off</tt> functions only set a flag
  92. which is checked when the function is about to be compiled. They do
  93. not trigger immediate compilation.
  94. </p>
  95. <p>
  96. Typical usage is <tt>jit.off(true, true)</tt> in the main chunk
  97. of a module to turn off JIT compilation for the whole module for
  98. debugging purposes.
  99. </p>
  100. <h3 id="jit_flush_tr"><tt>jit.flush(tr)</tt></h3>
  101. <p>
  102. Flushes the specified root trace and all of its side traces from the cache.
  103. The code for the trace will be retained as long as there are any other
  104. traces which link to it.
  105. </p>
  106. <h3 id="jit_status"><tt>status, ... = jit.status()</tt></h3>
  107. <p>
  108. Returns the current status of the JIT compiler. The first result is
  109. either <tt>true</tt> or <tt>false</tt> if the JIT compiler is turned
  110. on or off. The remaining results are strings for CPU-specific features
  111. and enabled optimizations.
  112. </p>
  113. <h3 id="jit_version"><tt>jit.version</tt></h3>
  114. <p>
  115. Contains the LuaJIT version string.
  116. </p>
  117. <h3 id="jit_version_num"><tt>jit.version_num</tt></h3>
  118. <p>
  119. Contains the version number of the LuaJIT core. Version xx.yy.zz
  120. is represented by the decimal number xxyyzz.
  121. </p>
  122. <h3 id="jit_os"><tt>jit.os</tt></h3>
  123. <p>
  124. Contains the target OS name:
  125. "Windows", "Linux", "OSX", "BSD", "Posix" or "Other".
  126. </p>
  127. <h3 id="jit_arch"><tt>jit.arch</tt></h3>
  128. <p>
  129. Contains the target architecture name:
  130. "x86", "x64" or "ppcspe".
  131. </p>
  132. <h2 id="jit_opt"><tt>jit.opt.*</tt> &mdash; JIT compiler optimization control</h2>
  133. <p>
  134. This sub-module provides the backend for the <tt>-O</tt> command line
  135. option.
  136. </p>
  137. <p>
  138. You can also use it programmatically, e.g.:
  139. </p>
  140. <pre class="code">
  141. jit.opt.start(2) -- same as -O2
  142. jit.opt.start("-dce")
  143. jit.opt.start("hotloop=10", "hotexit=2")
  144. </pre>
  145. <p>
  146. Unlike in LuaJIT 1.x, the module is built-in and
  147. <b>optimization is turned on by default!</b>
  148. It's no longer necessary to run <tt>require("jit.opt").start()</tt>,
  149. which was one of the ways to enable optimization.
  150. </p>
  151. <h2 id="jit_util"><tt>jit.util.*</tt> &mdash; JIT compiler introspection</h2>
  152. <p>
  153. This sub-module holds functions to introspect the bytecode, generated
  154. traces, the IR and the generated machine code. The functionality
  155. provided by this module is still in flux and therefore undocumented.
  156. </p>
  157. <p>
  158. The debug modules <tt>-jbc</tt>, <tt>-jv</tt> and <tt>-jdump</tt> make
  159. extensive use of these functions. Please check out their source code,
  160. if you want to know more.
