  92. The last release was a disaster:

  128. top to bottom. The new code is dramatically improved, but it needs a
  129. little bit of testing. The new features are:
  130. * Much faster rendering of high-poly models.
  131. * Dramatically improved vertex and pixel shader support.
  132. * New demo programs using shaders and render-to-texture.
  133. * Play movies by using an AVI as a texture (windows only).
  134. * Python scripting uses much faster python to C++ interface.
  135. * Support for procedurally-created geometry (eg, fractals, etc).
  136. * Cleaner, simpler internal data structures.
  137. * Comes with Python 2.4 support built-in.
  138. * A lot more.
  139. The new demo programs are:

  183. * makepanda contained a bug: it was compiling maya2egg6

  186. * Maya2egg65 has been added, for Maya 6.5 users.
  187. * The configuration combo "want-tk=false, want-directtools=true"
  188. used to confuse panda, because directtools uses Tk. Now
  189. it's smart enough to do the right thing.
  190. * When you ask controlJoint to create a control node for
  191. you, it initializes the control node to the joint's initial
  192. position.
  193. * The scene editor supposedly works now. We'll see.
  194. * The models directory was missing the animation 'panda-walk4',
  195. which is necessary for the tutorial.
  196. * A new directory 'win-extras' has been added to the
  197. thirdparty tree. This contains some miscellaneous python
  198. libraries needed at the Entertainment Technology Center.
  199. The script that builds the windows installer will include
  200. these libraries in the distribution.

  202. This is a bugfix release.
  203. * In the previous binary release, Config.prc did not contain a
  204. load-display line. This confuses pview. Pview is being fixed,
  205. but until then, the load-display line has been restored.
  206. * The Max and Maya plugins were inadvertently omitted from the
  207. previous binary release. This has been corrected.
  208. * An error in the distributed object networking layer has
  209. been fixed. The error only affected those who were trying to
  210. write LAN games using the CMU LAN server and p2p messages.
  211. * An error in the physics code has been corrected.
  212. * Python Megawidgets (pmw), which is required for "directtools",
  213. was not supplied in the previous release. We are now including
  214. pmw. In the Linux RPMs, to avoid overwriting any
  215. distribution-supplied pmw package, we put this package
  216. into /usr/share/panda3d.
  217. * To be consistent, we moved all the other python code into
  218. /usr/share/panda3d as well. This requires a file 'panda.pth'
  219. in the python lib directory.
  220. * In the binary RPMs, the file permissions of the python
  221. source files have been changed to 555, so that even if root
  222. runs panda, the '.pyc' files will not be modified or regenerated.
  223. ------------------------ RELEASE 1.0.0 ------------------------
  224. Configuration, installation, and execution environments:
  225. * This is the introduction of the new Panda version numbering
  226. system. The Panda version will be represented with three
  227. dot-separated numbers. The first number, the major version, will
  228. change only very rarely. The second number, the minor version,
  229. will increment frequently, with each new feature release. The
  230. third number will increment as needed to indicate bugfix releases
  231. on the minor version.
  232. * Use PandaSystem::get_version_string() (or
  233. PandaSystem.getVersionString() in Python) to return the version
  234. number of the currently-running Panda.
  235. * New runtime config system allows for dynamic loading of prc files
  236. and supports querying of available variable names. Use
  237. ConfigVariableString, ConfigVariableBool, etc. to get a value from
  238. the prc file(s); use the ConfigVariableManager and
  239. ConfigPageManager classes (or the cvMgr and cpMgr global objects
  240. in Python) to make general queries.
  241. * The ppremake build system now properly detects intra-tree
  242. dependencies, but only if each tree is fully built and installed
  243. before ppremake is run within the next dependent tree. Requires
  244. using ppremake version 1.18 or higher.
  245. Miscellaneous:
  246. * New support for encrypted streams, including encrypted subfiles
  247. within a multifile, using the OpenSSL encryption library. Adds
  248. pencrypt and pdecrypt programs.
  249. * The default port for PStats is now 5185, to avoid a conflict with
  250. Instant Messenger.
  251. * New "smooth" checkbox on PStats graphs provides a better sense of
  252. overall trends when graphs are noisy.
  253. * The meaning of the three components of HPR angles has been
  254. officially changed, in particular the meaning of the R component.
  255. This change was introduced to make the three components more
  256. consistent with each other, and to make P and R work together in a
  257. more sensible way. Existing code which used hard-coded HPR angles
  258. may be invalidated by this change. To convert existing code, you
  259. should use the global function old_to_new_hpr() to determine what
  260. new HPR triple that corresponds to an old HPR triple. As a
  261. temporary stopgap, you may define temp-hpr-fix 0 in your prc file.
  262. * Add support for weak reference counts using the WeakPointerTo
  263. class.
  264. * Add optional support for STL's semistandard hashing containers,
  265. e.g. hash_map and hash_set.
  266. * Panda no longer requires any registry keys or environment
  267. variables. This means it is now possible to run panda directly
  268. from a CD, install multiple copies of panda on a single machine,
  269. or install panda by copying the tree from another computer.
  270. Note that the installer does add the panda 'bin' directory to
  271. your PATH, and it does store an uninstall key in the registry,
  272. but neither of these is needed for panda to function.
  273. * The 'makepanda' build system is now capable of building
  274. prepackaged games for Windows. These prepackaged games are simply
  275. copies of panda with the game code included, some of the
  276. unnecessary stuff stripped out, and some changes to the start
  277. menu. See "Airblade - Installer" on the panda downloads page
  278. for an example.
  279. * This is the first release to include not just a binary installer
  280. for windows, but also binary RPMs for fedora 2, fedora 3, and
  281. redhat 9.
  282. * All of the sample programs have been tested. The ones that didn't
  283. work have been removed, the ones that do work have been (lightly)
  284. documented.
  285. * In the Win32 binary release, the 'config.prc' file has been moved
  286. to the 'etc' directory. This is to make it consistent with the
  287. Linux version.
  288. Rendering system:
  289. * Multitexture support is now part of Panda. This introduces the
  290. TextureStage and TexCoordName classes, as well as new interfaces
  291. like NodePath::add_texture(). As of the present release,
  292. multitexture is only supported when using the OpenGL renderer.
  293. * Support for programmable shaders is now possible using the Cg
  294. shader language. Assign a CgShaderAttrib to a node to apply a
  295. programmable shader.
  296. * New support for the Helix library allows playing of a streaming
  297. movie in a Panda texture. Presently only supported on Windows.
  298. * Deprecated the old "win-origin-x" and "win-origin-y" prc variables
  299. in favor of "win-origin", which takes two numbers separated by a
  300. space. Similarly with "win-width" and "win-height", in favor of
  301. "win-size".
  302. * Deprecated the old Camera::set_scene() interface; now a Camera
  303. implicitly renders whatever scene graph it is parented to.
  304. * Removed the old GraphicsLayer and GraphicsChannel classes.
  305. Instead of using these interfaces, you can now create any number
  306. of DisplayRegions directly on the window.
  307. * Offscreen render-to-a-texture will now be properly oriented under
  308. DirectX (previously, it would render the texture image upside-down
  309. and backward).
  310. * Support for automatic keystone correction caused by an off-axis
  311. physical projector using Lens::set_keystone().
  312. * New framebuffer-mode prc variable allows explicit control over the
  313. default framebuffer properties requested by Panda, including
  314. whether software or hardware rendering is required.
  315. * Added "multisample" transparency mode (alpha keyword "ms" in an
  316. egg file), which allows good-quality transparency (especially for
  317. alpha cutouts) without requiring back-to-front sorting, and
  318. without artifacts from improper sorting. This does require
  319. special multisample hardware capabilities, however. Presently
  320. supported in OpenGL mode only. Automatic fallback to "binary"
  321. transparency mode if multisample is not supported on a given
  322. platform.
  323. * New cursor-filename and icon-filename config variables replace the
  324. old win32-mono-cursor and win32-window-icon variables. Also,
  325. runtime control over these properties is now provided by the
  326. WindowProperties class.
  327. * Better management of potential memory leaks due to cyclic
  328. reference counts in the RenderState and TransformState caches.
  329. Now cycles are automatically detected and broken.
  330. Scene graph:
  331. * GeomNodes now have a CollideMask, just like CollisionNodes, which
  332. deprecates the old set_collide_geom() interface to detect
  333. collisions with visible geometry. There is a new NodePath
  334. interface for querying and setting the collide masks for single
  335. nodes or for entire subgraphs.
  336. * New NodePath interfaces to control lighting eliminate the need to
  337. create an explicit LightAttrib. The new lighting interfaces are
  338. designed to be similar to the new multitexture interfaces.
  339. * New NodePath interfaces to control the texture matrix, including a
  340. new project_texture() method to enable hardware-assisted
  341. projective texturing.
  342. * New NodePath::flatten_multitex() interface to bake in certain
  343. kinds of multitexture effects into a single texture, generated
  344. on-the-fly.
  345. * New options for ColorBlendAttrib and RenderModeAttrib.
  346. * NodePath::set_transparancy() now accepts a
  347. TransparencyAttrib::Mode parameter to specify exactly what kind of
  348. transparency you'd like.
  349. * New NodePath::set_render_mode() interface accepts a
  350. RenderModeAttrib::Mode parameter, deprecating
  351. set_render_mode_filled() and set_render_mode_wireframe().
  352. * LerpQuatInterval can be used as a drop-in replacement for
  353. LerpHprInterval; it performs spherical lerps in quaternion space,
  354. rather than lerping each component of a HPR individually.
  355. LerpHprInterval is not deprecated; it remains useful within its
  356. limitations.
  357. * New DirectSliderBar gui object implements a standard slider bar
  358. with a thumb (like a window scroll bar).
  359. * Lighting normals are now automatically counterscaled properly when
  360. lighting is enabled in the presence of a scale, uniform or
  361. nonuniform, in the scene graph. You can also use
  362. RescaleNormalAttrib for explicit control over this behavior.
  363. * Improvements to RopeNode for rendering splines in various
  364. representations.
  365. Collisions and physics systems:
  366. * New CollisionSegment and CollisionInvSphere collision solids.
  367. * The collision system now reports normals for intersections
  368. detected from collision rays, segments, and lines.
  369. * Several improvements to the physics system.
  370. Model converters:
  371. * x2egg and egg2x added to converters, as well as to inline
  372. conversion supported via ptloader. This adds support for
  373. DirectX's native so-called "retained-mode" file format. This file
  374. format supports animation and joint hierarchies as well as basic
  375. polygonal models.
  376. * vrml2egg added to converters, as well as to inline conversion
  377. supported via ptloader. This adds support for VRML 2.0 model
  378. files only.
  379. * Added -noabs option to many model converters, to help detect
  380. problems with unintended absolute path references.
  381. * Added egg2bam -flatten and -combine-geoms.
  382. * We now have working exporters for Max5, Max6, Max7, Maya5, Maya6.
  383. (Update: these were accidentally omitted from the binary release)
  384. * The Max exporter is dramatically improved: it now includes support
  385. for character studio, and the polygon winding bug has been fixed.
  386. ------------------------ RELEASE 2004-07-27 ------------------------
  387. Configuration, installation, and execution environments:
  388. * We have moved to a new, more explicit naming convention for our
  389. import statements. Rather than installing all Python files into
  390. one big flat namespace, we now import them from their appropriate
  391. directories, e.g. "from direct.actor import Actor".
  392. * "from ShowBaseGlobal import *" is replaced with "import
  393. direct.directbase.DirectStart" and/or "from pandac.PandaModules
  394. import *".
  395. * The old "generatePythonCode" script has been replaced with a new
  396. "genPyCode" script that automates the Python wrapper generation
  397. process without requiring any special parameters.
  398. * The old dependencies on environment variables have been removed.
  399. There are no longer requirements for any environment variables to
  400. be set in either the build process or the runtime environment
  401. (although a few optional environment variables remain to allow
  402. custom configuration).
  403. * INSTALL document greatly enhanced for clarity.
  404. * An automatic build script is now provided to further simplify
  405. building Panda3D for Unix and Cygwin users.
  406. * The old "Configrc" filename to identify runtime configuration
  407. files is deprecated; configuration files should now be named
  408. Config.prc, or in general, *.prc. The system-default
  409. configuration files are auto-generated as 20_panda.prc,
  410. 30_pandatool.prc, and 40_direct.prc (the numeric prefixes control
  411. the order in which these are loaded at runtime).
  412. Rendering system:
  413. * Some deprecated methods of CollisionEntry have been flagged to
  414. raise an exception now; these are replaced with the newer
  415. interfaces that can return a collision point in an arbitrary
  416. coordinate system.
  417. * Camera::set_cull_center() can be used for debugging culling by
  418. setting the effective point of visibility culling different from
  419. the actual point. From Python, use base.oobeCull() to examine
  420. this effect.
  421. * Alt-Enter in pview toggles between fullscreen and windowed modes.
  422. * Added experimental support for GL display lists.
  423. Scene graph:
  424. * Exposed methods to directly retrieve and set the individual
  425. vertices of a GeomNode from Python code.
  426. * The new PortalNode defines the interface for Panda's new
  427. cell-portal visibility system; each PortalNode is a window into
  428. another zone, or a separate subgraph; the PortalNode can hide or
  429. show the subset of its zone's geometry visible through its
  430. "portal".
  431. * The new PolylightNode applies a simple lighting-like effect
  432. without actually using lighting; objects will brighten or darken
  433. as a whole according to their proximity to the light. Use
  434. PolylightEffect to enable this effect.
  435. * The new FadeLODNode works like ordinary LODNode, but the switches
  436. are alpha-blended in over a short period of time rather than
  437. popping immediately.
  438. Text display:
  439. * Text now supports embedded mode changes--special characters to
  440. switch fonts, colors, scale, etc. within a line or within a
  441. paragraph.
  442. * Windows IME is better supported by Panda/Direct widgets
  443. (e.g. PGEntry and/or DirectEntry) in fullscreen mode as well as in

  450. * We once again support the Microsoft VC6 compiler.
  451. * The "pstats" program is now provided in the Windows environment as
  452. part of pandatool. It is similar to "gtk-stats" on a Unix
  453. environment, and can be used to view a real-time graph of
  454. performance timing in a running Panda process. See
  455. panda/src/doc/howto.use_pstats.
  456. * New session recording and playback support allows capturing user
  457. and network input to a disk file, for replaying later, offline.
  458. Use "record-session filename.boo" and "playback-session
  459. filename.boo" in your Configrc file.
  460. * The genPyCode script now uses PythonWare's SqueezeTool to
  461. "squeeze" the large number of generated .py files into a single
  462. shared library, for substantially improved startup times on
  463. Windows.
  464. * The Task system now has substantially reduced overhead when many
  465. doLater's are waiting in the system.
  466. * The png image file type is now supported.
  467. Rendering system:
  468. * Introducing native DirectX9 graphics support, although we do not
  469. yet support any features specific to DirectX9, such as
  470. programmable shaders.
  471. * DirectX7 and DirectX8 modules are now somewhat more robust.
  472. * New support for offscreen rendering and render-to-a-texture, which
  473. will become part of a general multipass-rendering interface.
  474. Presently supported in OpenGL, with limited DirectX support. Use
  475. GraphicsWindow::make_texture_buffer() to make a buffer you can
  476. render into and apply the result as a texture map to objects in
  477. your scene. The NonlinearImager in the distort directory is a
  478. complex example of using this interface.
  479. * Explicit support for the Mesa 3D library's software-based
  480. offscreen rendering, allowing a Panda program to generate
  481. offscreen images as a background process, independently of any
  482. graphics card or desktop environment.
  483. * GraphicsLayer and GraphicsWindow render order can now be easily
  484. adjusted dynamically with set_sort() methods.
  485. * Built-in frame rate meter can be activated by setting
  486. "show-frame-rate-meter 1" in your Configrc file.
  487. Scene graph:
  488. * New tag system on PandaNodes allows storing of arbitrary string
  489. data on nodes, keyed by a string dictionary. The
  490. NodePath::get_net_tag() interface retrieves the data value for a
  491. particular tag on a node or the nearest ancestor of the node.
  492. NodePath::find() can search for a node in the scene graph with a
  493. given tag or tag/value pair.
  494. * Explicit shear transforms are now supported on nodes, as well as
  495. in character animation tables.
  496. * Characters now have an interface to control joint and slider
  497. values dynamically, instead of strictly from an animation file.
  498. Use Actor.exposeJoint() and/or Actor.controlJoint().
  499. * Nurbs surfaces and curves can now be rendered directly by Panda,
  500. which will tesselate them on the fly at some CPU cost. This is a
  501. modeling convenience only; it is not intended to be used for
  502. production code. Triangle strips are still the fastest way to
  503. render complex surfaces.
  504. * However, Rope.py is now provided as a high-level wrapper around
  505. Panda's runtime NURBS curve evaluator; it can render dynamic
  506. curves in a variety of ways.
  507. * The egg library is now published to Python, allowing construction
  508. of geometry on-the-fly by show code for convenience. This is also
  509. intended as a developer's convenience more than a production
  510. feature.
  511. Text display:
  512. * The special character \3 (ASCII 0x03) embedded in a text string
  513. indicates the position of a soft hyphen when wordwrap mode is in
  514. effect. The character \4 (ASCII 0x04) serves as a hyphenless
  515. invisible break point.
  516. * A default font is compiled in even if the FreeType library is not
  517. available.
  518. * pnmtext library added for rendering text directly into an image.
  519. * New egg-mkfont utility uses FreeType to generate static font
  520. models that Panda clients without FreeType can use to render text.
  521. Collision and physics system:
  522. * More robust collision interface, supporting NodePaths properly so
  523. that collisions detected into (and from) particular instances of
  524. nodes can be differentiated. CollisionEntry has a much simpler
  525. mechanism for getting the intersection point and normal in an
  526. arbitrary coordinate space defined by a NodePath, instead of the
  527. user having to convert the coordinate space by hand.
  528. * New CollisionVisualizer object to visually show collisions as they
  529. are tested and detected, useful for optimizing collision
  530. performance. Activate this with
  531. base.cTrav.showCollisions(render).
  532. * Implicit velocity system is now integrated with scene graph; the
  533. relative velocity of moving nodes is automatically considered when
  534. testing for most kinds of collisions. Use
  535. NodePath::set_fluid_pos() to indicate that a node is moving
  536. fluidly to its new position and should test for collisions along
  537. the way (as opposed to the more traditional NodePath::set_pos(),
  538. which unconditionally sets the node to its new position).
  539. * Introduction of "tube" collision shapes, sometimes called
  540. "capsules" in other libraries. It is a cylinder capped with
  541. hemispheres.
  542. * CollisionSolid::set_effective_normal() provides a way to define a
  543. sloping surface with an apparently vertical normal, to prevent
  544. characters standing on the surface from sliding down.
  545. * Collision polygons now respect clipping planes.
  546. * Many changes to physics system.
  547. HTTPClient and net systems:
  548. * More verbose error reporting.
  549. * Better support for proxy servers, including SOCKS5 proxies.
  550. Model converters:
  551. * maya2egg converter now supports skeleton/morph animation files
  552. fully, including soft-skinning, hard-skinning, and morphs (blend
  553. shapes). NURBS and polygon meshes are both supported.
  554. * A new Maya plugin called libmayapview allows opening a Panda
  555. window from within Maya to view how the scene will look once it
  556. has been converted to Panda.
  557. * New soft2egg converter supports models and animation stored in
  558. SoftImage 4.3 files. (Newer versions of SoftImage are not
  559. supported.)
  560. * New egg2flt program more or less reverses flt2egg.
  561. * The ptloader Panda loader allows direct loading into Panda of most
  562. model file types defined within pandatool: Maya, flt, and lwo.
  563. Specify load-file-type ptloader in your Configrc file.
  564. * New egg-optchar preprocessor improves character animation runtime
  565. performance by eliminating unneeded joints. It can also
  566. reorganize a skeleton and/or expose joints for the show code's
  567. convenience.
  568. * New egg-qtess utility converts NURBS egg files to polygon egg
  569. files with either a trivial interface for quick conversions or a
  570. sophisticated parameter file for more precise control. It
  571. preserves soft-skinning and animation information.
  572. * New visibility flag in egg format allows model files to define
  573. invisible subtrees which will be initially stashed when loaded.
  574. * The egg library now allows implicit forward references to vertex
  575. pools, making it much easier to generate a valid egg file from a
  576. third-party model format.
