  242. The last release was a disaster:

  248. it temporarily. It keeps the few things from 1.2.2 that were worth

  276. This is a BETA release. It's pretty reliable, but there are still a
  277. few quirks here and there. Over the summer, Panda3D was overhauled
  278. top to bottom. The new code is dramatically improved, but it needs a
  279. little bit of testing. The new features are:
  280. * Much faster rendering of high-poly models.
  281. * Dramatically improved vertex and pixel shader support.
  282. * New demo programs using shaders and render-to-texture.
  283. * Play movies by using an AVI as a texture (windows only).
  284. * Python scripting uses much faster python to C++ interface.
  285. * Support for procedurally-created geometry (eg, fractals, etc).
  286. * Cleaner, simpler internal data structures.
  287. * Comes with Python 2.4 support built-in.
  288. * A lot more.
  289. The new demo programs are:

  337. * The configuration combo "want-tk=false, want-directtools=true"
  338. used to confuse panda, because directtools uses Tk. Now
  339. it's smart enough to do the right thing.

  341. you, it initializes the control node to the joint's initial

  343. * The scene editor supposedly works now. We'll see.
  344. * The models directory was missing the animation 'panda-walk4',

  352. This is a bugfix release.
  353. * In the previous binary release, Config.prc did not contain a
  354. load-display line. This confuses pview. Pview is being fixed,
  355. but until then, the load-display line has been restored.
  356. * The Max and Maya plugins were inadvertently omitted from the
  357. previous binary release. This has been corrected.
  358. * An error in the distributed object networking layer has
  359. been fixed. The error only affected those who were trying to
  360. write LAN games using the CMU LAN server and p2p messages.
  361. * An error in the physics code has been corrected.
  362. * Python Megawidgets (pmw), which is required for "directtools",
  363. was not supplied in the previous release. We are now including
  364. pmw. In the Linux RPMs, to avoid overwriting any
  365. distribution-supplied pmw package, we put this package
  366. into /usr/share/panda3d.
  367. * To be consistent, we moved all the other python code into
  368. /usr/share/panda3d as well. This requires a file 'panda.pth'
  369. in the python lib directory.
  370. * In the binary RPMs, the file permissions of the python
  371. source files have been changed to 555, so that even if root
  372. runs panda, the '.pyc' files will not be modified or regenerated.
  373. ------------------------ RELEASE 1.0.0 ------------------------
  374. Configuration, installation, and execution environments:
  375. * This is the introduction of the new Panda version numbering
  376. system. The Panda version will be represented with three
  377. dot-separated numbers. The first number, the major version, will
  378. change only very rarely. The second number, the minor version,
  379. will increment frequently, with each new feature release. The
  380. third number will increment as needed to indicate bugfix releases
  381. on the minor version.
  382. * Use PandaSystem::get_version_string() (or
  383. PandaSystem.getVersionString() in Python) to return the version
  384. number of the currently-running Panda.
  385. * New runtime config system allows for dynamic loading of prc files
  386. and supports querying of available variable names. Use
  387. ConfigVariableString, ConfigVariableBool, etc. to get a value from
  388. the prc file(s); use the ConfigVariableManager and
  389. ConfigPageManager classes (or the cvMgr and cpMgr global objects
  390. in Python) to make general queries.
  391. * The ppremake build system now properly detects intra-tree
  392. dependencies, but only if each tree is fully built and installed
  393. before ppremake is run within the next dependent tree. Requires
  394. using ppremake version 1.18 or higher.
  395. Miscellaneous:
  396. * New support for encrypted streams, including encrypted subfiles
  397. within a multifile, using the OpenSSL encryption library. Adds
  398. pencrypt and pdecrypt programs.
  399. * The default port for PStats is now 5185, to avoid a conflict with
  400. Instant Messenger.
  401. * New "smooth" checkbox on PStats graphs provides a better sense of
  402. overall trends when graphs are noisy.
  403. * The meaning of the three components of HPR angles has been
  404. officially changed, in particular the meaning of the R component.
  405. This change was introduced to make the three components more
  406. consistent with each other, and to make P and R work together in a
  407. more sensible way. Existing code which used hard-coded HPR angles
  408. may be invalidated by this change. To convert existing code, you
  409. should use the global function old_to_new_hpr() to determine what
  410. new HPR triple that corresponds to an old HPR triple. As a
  411. temporary stopgap, you may define temp-hpr-fix 0 in your prc file.
  412. * Add support for weak reference counts using the WeakPointerTo
  413. class.
  414. * Add optional support for STL's semistandard hashing containers,
  415. e.g. hash_map and hash_set.
  416. * Panda no longer requires any registry keys or environment
  417. variables. This means it is now possible to run panda directly
  418. from a CD, install multiple copies of panda on a single machine,
  419. or install panda by copying the tree from another computer.
  420. Note that the installer does add the panda 'bin' directory to
  421. your PATH, and it does store an uninstall key in the registry,
  422. but neither of these is needed for panda to function.
  423. * The 'makepanda' build system is now capable of building
  424. prepackaged games for Windows. These prepackaged games are simply
  425. copies of panda with the game code included, some of the
  426. unnecessary stuff stripped out, and some changes to the start
  427. menu. See "Airblade - Installer" on the panda downloads page
  428. for an example.
  429. * This is the first release to include not just a binary installer
  430. for windows, but also binary RPMs for fedora 2, fedora 3, and
  431. redhat 9.
  432. * All of the sample programs have been tested. The ones that didn't
  433. work have been removed, the ones that do work have been (lightly)
  434. documented.
  435. * In the Win32 binary release, the 'config.prc' file has been moved

  439. * Multitexture support is now part of Panda. This introduces the
  440. TextureStage and TexCoordName classes, as well as new interfaces
  441. like NodePath::add_texture(). As of the present release,
  442. multitexture is only supported when using the OpenGL renderer.
  443. * Support for programmable shaders is now possible using the Cg
  444. shader language. Assign a CgShaderAttrib to a node to apply a
  445. programmable shader.
  446. * New support for the Helix library allows playing of a streaming
  447. movie in a Panda texture. Presently only supported on Windows.
  448. * Deprecated the old "win-origin-x" and "win-origin-y" prc variables
  449. in favor of "win-origin", which takes two numbers separated by a

  462. * New framebuffer-mode prc variable allows explicit control over the
  463. default framebuffer properties requested by Panda, including
  464. whether software or hardware rendering is required.
  465. * Added "multisample" transparency mode (alpha keyword "ms" in an
  466. egg file), which allows good-quality transparency (especially for
  467. alpha cutouts) without requiring back-to-front sorting, and
  468. without artifacts from improper sorting. This does require
  469. special multisample hardware capabilities, however. Presently
  470. supported in OpenGL mode only. Automatic fallback to "binary"
  471. transparency mode if multisample is not supported on a given
  472. platform.
  473. * New cursor-filename and icon-filename config variables replace the
  474. old win32-mono-cursor and win32-window-icon variables. Also,
  475. runtime control over these properties is now provided by the
  476. WindowProperties class.
  477. * Better management of potential memory leaks due to cyclic
  478. reference counts in the RenderState and TransformState caches.
  479. Now cycles are automatically detected and broken.
  480. Scene graph:
  481. * GeomNodes now have a CollideMask, just like CollisionNodes, which
  482. deprecates the old set_collide_geom() interface to detect
  483. collisions with visible geometry. There is a new NodePath
  484. interface for querying and setting the collide masks for single
  485. nodes or for entire subgraphs.
  486. * New NodePath interfaces to control lighting eliminate the need to
  487. create an explicit LightAttrib. The new lighting interfaces are
  488. designed to be similar to the new multitexture interfaces.
  489. * New NodePath interfaces to control the texture matrix, including a
  490. new project_texture() method to enable hardware-assisted
  491. projective texturing.
  492. * New NodePath::flatten_multitex() interface to bake in certain
  493. kinds of multitexture effects into a single texture, generated
  494. on-the-fly.

  510. lighting is enabled in the presence of a scale, uniform or

  512. RescaleNormalAttrib for explicit control over this behavior.

  515. Collisions and physics systems:
  516. * New CollisionSegment and CollisionInvSphere collision solids.
  517. * The collision system now reports normals for intersections
  518. detected from collision rays, segments, and lines.

  520. Model converters:
  521. * x2egg and egg2x added to converters, as well as to inline
  522. conversion supported via ptloader. This adds support for
  523. DirectX's native so-called "retained-mode" file format. This file
  524. format supports animation and joint hierarchies as well as basic
  525. polygonal models.
  526. * vrml2egg added to converters, as well as to inline conversion
  527. supported via ptloader. This adds support for VRML 2.0 model
  528. files only.
  529. * Added -noabs option to many model converters, to help detect
  530. problems with unintended absolute path references.

  538. * We have moved to a new, more explicit naming convention for our
  539. import statements. Rather than installing all Python files into
  540. one big flat namespace, we now import them from their appropriate
  541. directories, e.g. "from direct.actor import Actor".
  542. * "from ShowBaseGlobal import *" is replaced with "import
  543. direct.directbase.DirectStart" and/or "from pandac.PandaModules
  544. import *".
  545. * The old "generatePythonCode" script has been replaced with a new
  546. "genPyCode" script that automates the Python wrapper generation
  547. process without requiring any special parameters.
  548. * The old dependencies on environment variables have been removed.
  549. There are no longer requirements for any environment variables to

  563. * Some deprecated methods of CollisionEntry have been flagged to
  564. raise an exception now; these are replaced with the newer
  565. interfaces that can return a collision point in an arbitrary
  566. coordinate system.
  567. * Camera::set_cull_center() can be used for debugging culling by
  568. setting the effective point of visibility culling different from
  569. the actual point. From Python, use base.oobeCull() to examine
  570. this effect.
  571. * Alt-Enter in pview toggles between fullscreen and windowed modes.
  572. * Added experimental support for GL display lists.
  573. Scene graph:
  574. * Exposed methods to directly retrieve and set the individual
  575. vertices of a GeomNode from Python code.
  576. * The new PortalNode defines the interface for Panda's new
  577. cell-portal visibility system; each PortalNode is a window into
  578. another zone, or a separate subgraph; the PortalNode can hide or
  579. show the subset of its zone's geometry visible through its
  580. "portal".
  581. * The new PolylightNode applies a simple lighting-like effect
  582. without actually using lighting; objects will brighten or darken
  583. as a whole according to their proximity to the light. Use
  584. PolylightEffect to enable this effect.
  585. * The new FadeLODNode works like ordinary LODNode, but the switches
  586. are alpha-blended in over a short period of time rather than
  587. popping immediately.
  588. Text display:
  589. * Text now supports embedded mode changes--special characters to
  590. switch fonts, colors, scale, etc. within a line or within a
  591. paragraph.
  592. * Windows IME is better supported by Panda/Direct widgets
  593. (e.g. PGEntry and/or DirectEntry) in fullscreen mode as well as in

  601. * The "pstats" program is now provided in the Windows environment as
  602. part of pandatool. It is similar to "gtk-stats" on a Unix
  603. environment, and can be used to view a real-time graph of
  604. performance timing in a running Panda process. See
  605. panda/src/doc/howto.use_pstats.
  606. * New session recording and playback support allows capturing user
  607. and network input to a disk file, for replaying later, offline.
  608. Use "record-session filename.boo" and "playback-session
  609. filename.boo" in your Configrc file.
  610. * The genPyCode script now uses PythonWare's SqueezeTool to
  611. "squeeze" the large number of generated .py files into a single
  612. shared library, for substantially improved startup times on

  617. Rendering system:
  618. * Introducing native DirectX9 graphics support, although we do not
  619. yet support any features specific to DirectX9, such as
  620. programmable shaders.
  621. * DirectX7 and DirectX8 modules are now somewhat more robust.
  622. * New support for offscreen rendering and render-to-a-texture, which
  623. will become part of a general multipass-rendering interface.
  624. Presently supported in OpenGL, with limited DirectX support. Use
  625. GraphicsWindow::make_texture_buffer() to make a buffer you can
  626. render into and apply the result as a texture map to objects in
  627. your scene. The NonlinearImager in the distort directory is a
  628. complex example of using this interface.
  629. * Explicit support for the Mesa 3D library's software-based
  630. offscreen rendering, allowing a Panda program to generate
  631. offscreen images as a background process, independently of any
  632. graphics card or desktop environment.
  633. * GraphicsLayer and GraphicsWindow render order can now be easily
  634. adjusted dynamically with set_sort() methods.
  635. * Built-in frame rate meter can be activated by setting
  636. "show-frame-rate-meter 1" in your Configrc file.
  637. Scene graph:
  638. * New tag system on PandaNodes allows storing of arbitrary string
  639. data on nodes, keyed by a string dictionary. The
  640. NodePath::get_net_tag() interface retrieves the data value for a
  641. particular tag on a node or the nearest ancestor of the node.
  642. NodePath::find() can search for a node in the scene graph with a
  643. given tag or tag/value pair.
  644. * Explicit shear transforms are now supported on nodes, as well as
  645. in character animation tables.
  646. * Characters now have an interface to control joint and slider
  647. values dynamically, instead of strictly from an animation file.
  648. Use Actor.exposeJoint() and/or Actor.controlJoint().
  649. * Nurbs surfaces and curves can now be rendered directly by Panda,
  650. which will tesselate them on the fly at some CPU cost. This is a
  651. modeling convenience only; it is not intended to be used for
  652. production code. Triangle strips are still the fastest way to
  653. render complex surfaces.
  654. * However, Rope.py is now provided as a high-level wrapper around
  655. Panda's runtime NURBS curve evaluator; it can render dynamic
  656. curves in a variety of ways.
  657. * The egg library is now published to Python, allowing construction
  658. of geometry on-the-fly by show code for convenience. This is also
  659. intended as a developer's convenience more than a production
  660. feature.
  661. Text display:
  662. * The special character \3 (ASCII 0x03) embedded in a text string
  663. indicates the position of a soft hyphen when wordwrap mode is in
  664. effect. The character \4 (ASCII 0x04) serves as a hyphenless
  665. invisible break point.
  666. * A default font is compiled in even if the FreeType library is not
  667. available.
  668. * pnmtext library added for rendering text directly into an image.
  669. * New egg-mkfont utility uses FreeType to generate static font
  670. models that Panda clients without FreeType can use to render text.
  671. Collision and physics system:
  672. * More robust collision interface, supporting NodePaths properly so
  673. that collisions detected into (and from) particular instances of
  674. nodes can be differentiated. CollisionEntry has a much simpler
  675. mechanism for getting the intersection point and normal in an
  676. arbitrary coordinate space defined by a NodePath, instead of the
  677. user having to convert the coordinate space by hand.
  678. * New CollisionVisualizer object to visually show collisions as they
  679. are tested and detected, useful for optimizing collision
  680. performance. Activate this with
  681. base.cTrav.showCollisions(render).
  682. * Implicit velocity system is now integrated with scene graph; the
  683. relative velocity of moving nodes is automatically considered when
  684. testing for most kinds of collisions. Use
  685. NodePath::set_fluid_pos() to indicate that a node is moving
  686. fluidly to its new position and should test for collisions along
  687. the way (as opposed to the more traditional NodePath::set_pos(),
  688. which unconditionally sets the node to its new position).
  689. * Introduction of "tube" collision shapes, sometimes called
  690. "capsules" in other libraries. It is a cylinder capped with
  691. hemispheres.
  692. * CollisionSolid::set_effective_normal() provides a way to define a
  693. sloping surface with an apparently vertical normal, to prevent
  694. characters standing on the surface from sliding down.
  695. * Collision polygons now respect clipping planes.
  696. * Many changes to physics system.
  697. HTTPClient and net systems:
  698. * More verbose error reporting.
  699. * Better support for proxy servers, including SOCKS5 proxies.
  700. Model converters:
  701. * maya2egg converter now supports skeleton/morph animation files
  702. fully, including soft-skinning, hard-skinning, and morphs (blend
  703. shapes). NURBS and polygon meshes are both supported.
  704. * A new Maya plugin called libmayapview allows opening a Panda
  705. window from within Maya to view how the scene will look once it
  706. has been converted to Panda.
  707. * New soft2egg converter supports models and animation stored in
  708. SoftImage 4.3 files. (Newer versions of SoftImage are not
  709. supported.)
  710. * New egg2flt program more or less reverses flt2egg.
  711. * The ptloader Panda loader allows direct loading into Panda of most
  712. model file types defined within pandatool: Maya, flt, and lwo.
  713. Specify load-file-type ptloader in your Configrc file.
  714. * New egg-optchar preprocessor improves character animation runtime
  715. performance by eliminating unneeded joints. It can also
  716. reorganize a skeleton and/or expose joints for the show code's
  717. convenience.
  718. * New egg-qtess utility converts NURBS egg files to polygon egg
  719. files with either a trivial interface for quick conversions or a
  720. sophisticated parameter file for more precise control. It
  721. preserves soft-skinning and animation information.
  722. * New visibility flag in egg format allows model files to define
  723. invisible subtrees which will be initially stashed when loaded.
  724. * The egg library now allows implicit forward references to vertex
  725. pools, making it much easier to generate a valid egg file from a
