  1. Panda3D is an open source 3D Engine originally developed, and still
  2. actively maintained, by the Walt Disney VR Studio. Additional
  3. development and support for the open source community is provided by
  4. the Entertainment Technology Center of Carnegie-Mellon University.
  5. At the present, we are providing two completely unrelated systems for
  6. building Panda. The original build system, ppremake, is still in
  7. active use by the VR Studio, but will probably eventually be phased
  8. out in favor of the new build system, makepanda.
  9. The ppremake system is a makefile generator, and allows you to
  10. configure your build environment to a high degree of customization.
  11. It is a fairly complex build system, and it requires some comfort with
  12. using the command-line make utilities.
  13. The makepanda system is a Python script that directly invokes the
  14. compiler to build the Panda sources. Its emphasis is on providing a
  15. hands-off, simple approach to building Panda.
  16. Both systems may require you to first install a number of third-party
  17. tools if you would like to make them available for Panda, such as
  18. FreeType or OpenSSL. You may also download a zip file that contains
  19. precompiled versions of these third-party libraries from the Panda
  20. website, which is especially useful when used in conjunction with the
  21. makepanda system.
  22. If you are interested in compiling Panda for yourself, you are welcome
  23. to use either build system. Please refer to the documents INSTALL-PP
  24. or INSTALL-MK, in this directory, for build instructions for ppremake
  25. and makepanda, respectively. You may also be interested in
  26. downloading the prebuilt Panda3D binaries from the Panda website at
  27. http://www.panda3d.org/ .
