  26. .SH DESCRIPTION
  27. The \fBpzip\fP program compresses the named file(s) using the Panda
  28. native compression algorithm (gzip in practice, but with a different
  29. file header). The compressed versions are written to a file with the
  30. same name as the original, but the extension .pz added to the
  31. filename, and the original file is removed (unless the version with
  32. \fB\-o\fP is used, in which case you can compress only one file, you
  33. specify the destination file name, and the original file is not removed).
  34. .PP
  35. In many cases, Panda can read the resulting .pz file directly,
  36. exactly as if it were still in its uncompressed original form.
  37. In fact, unless \fBvfs\-implicit\-pz\fP is set to \fBfalse\fP in your
  38. Config.prc file, you can also load the file by referencing it with its
  39. original filename (without the .pz extension), even though it no longer
  40. exists under that filename, and Panda will find the .pz file and
  41. transparently decompress it on the fly, as if the original, uncompressed
  42. file still existed.
  43. .PP
  44. Note that if you are adding files to a Panda multifile (.mf file) with the
  45. .BR multify (1)
  46. command, it is not necessary to encrypt them separately; \fBmultify\fP has an
  47. inline encryption option.
  48. .PP
  49. \fBpunzip\fP reverses the operation of a previous \fBpzip\fP command.
  50. It uncompresses the contents of the named source file(s) and removes
  51. the .pz extension.
  52. .SH OPTIONS
  53. These options apply to \fBpzip\fP only.
