  1. There are several ways to build the FreeType library, depending on
  2. your system and the level of customization you need. Here is a short
  3. overview of the documentation available:
  4. I. Normal installation and upgrades
  5. ===================================
  6. 1. Native TrueType Hinting
  7. Native TrueType hinting is disabled by default[1]. If you really
  8. need it, read the file `TRUETYPE' for information.
  9. 2. Unix Systems (including Mac OS X, Cygwin, and MSys on Windows)
  10. Please read *both* `UPGRADE.UNIX' and `INSTALL.UNIX' to install or
  11. upgrade FreeType 2 on a Unix system. Note that you *need* GNU
  12. Make for automatic compilation, since other make tools won't work
  13. (this includes BSD Make).
  14. GNU Make VERSION 3.80 OR NEWER IS NEEDED!
  15. 3. On VMS with the `mms' build tool
  16. See `INSTALL.VMS' for installation instructions on this platform.
  17. 4. Other systems using GNU Make
  18. On non-Unix platforms, it is possible to build the library using
  19. GNU Make utility. Note that *NO OTHER MAKE TOOL WILL WORK*[2]!
  20. This methods supports several compilers on Windows, OS/2, and
  21. BeOS, including MinGW, Visual C++, Borland C++, and more.
  22. Instructions are provided in the file `INSTALL.GNU'.
  23. 5. With an IDE Project File (e.g., for Visual Studio or CodeWarrior)
  24. We provide a small number of `project files' for various IDEs to
  25. automatically build the library as well. Note that these files
  26. are not supported and only sporadically maintained by FreeType
  27. developers, so don't expect them to work in each release.
  28. To find them, have a look at the content of the `builds/<system>'
  29. directory, where <system> stands for your OS or environment.
  30. 6. From you own IDE, or own Makefiles
  31. If you want to create your own project file, follow the
  32. instructions given in the `INSTALL.ANY' document of this
  33. directory.
  34. II. Custom builds of the library
  35. ================================
  36. Customizing the compilation of FreeType is easy, and allows you to
  37. select only the components of the font engine that you really need.
  38. For more details read the file `CUSTOMIZE'.
  39. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  40. [1] More details on: http://www.freetype.org/patents.html
  41. [2] make++, a make tool written in Perl, has sufficient support of GNU
  42. make extensions to build FreeType. See
  43. http://makepp.sourceforge.net
  44. for more information; you need version 1.19 or newer, and you must
  45. pass option `--norc-substitution'.
